They were top of the line in their model years. I had friends with an 85 hp stack 6 motor on a 13' Allisoncraft hull. It was torquey, but just a little loud.

I think Merc probably switched over to the black covers when they went to the 100 hp--and painted all their engines black from there on.

I don't have any problem with my 1960 Mercury (white cover) model 300. Powers the 14ft 1960 Glastron Starflite just fine. I bought/rebuilt the old boat on a whim. Like old cars, this old boat gets a lot of attention at the local Watering Hole. I'll bet the new Mercs wont be running in 2064.

Re: Merc. outboards with white cover.

Ain't nothing wrong with the Cloud White Mercs of '59 to '62. Nothing changed but the color when they transitioned from white to black. As a matter of fact, the reason they went to black in the first place was because Carl Kiekhaefer (founder, and CEO of Merc at the time) thought the new, white, 1962 100 hp Merc 1000 looked too big to sell. He mentioned this during a board meeting that was attended by the wife of one of the board members. She mentioned that any woman could tell you that you wear black to appear smaller. Legend has it, Carl ordered one of his minions to run down to the shop and get a can of spray paint and he painted the show motor right there in the board room. When done, he was quite surprised to see that the motor did indeed look smaller! Initially, the 1000 was the only black Merc, but by 1963 they had switch the whole line to black...

They used the "Dyna-Float" triangular covers on the 35hp & up models from 1955 to about 1963.
