Hey Guys,
I am new to this site and also a new boat owner of a nice 82 barreta 18 bow rider, anyway I just bought the boat and of coarse the guy tells me just had it serviced last fall and has not used it at all this year, started up and run great in his yard so for $1300 I took it home. The next day we took to the water and fired her up! but now since it is the unit is in the water I can hear a new noise! As I droove around for a couple of minutes it got loud! So I took it back home and removed the outdrive, found small amount of water in the bellow and also the large round oring sitting there, but cannot find a hole in the bellow and the gimble bearing feels good! Drained the outdrive oil and found metal filling on the magnet and no Orings on the plugs??? I then removed the top plate and yikes!!!! both gears missing teeth! of coarse the guys says to me that he never had any issues "Ya right" Do I buy complete unit on ebay or a new unit here? I can find one on ebay for about half the price!
Thanks,
Jim

sei new unit cheapest way to go, but to rebuild the case takes alot of tools. Want to get back on the water fast, sei unit bolt it up and go.

You didnt say what type of drive you have.

Are you talking about the SEI units iboats sells? If you are, they have a good reputation. And yes, I would buy it here instead of ebay.

If youre talking about a Merc they use some flat washer/gasket things not orings. They stay stuck on the drive sometimes. Was there water in the drive lube?

I just went through the same thing with my outdrive. Unfortunately, I didn't have the money to purchase the SEI drive, or that's the route I would have gone. I did find one on Craigslist, the guy threw a rod and gave up on boating, so he was selling the complete outdrive, and I talked him down to $325 with a SS prop. I was very fortunate, however, I also took a gamble.

Now, the one thing I will say is that you need to replace the entire outdrive, not just the upper unit. Those metal filings probably made their way into the lower unit, and it could be damaged as well.

Keep one thing in mind. The upper and lower units share oil. If you have a lot of metal in the upper, you can bet you have metal in the lower as well.

That is a 120/140 with a low gear ratio. What engine do you have?

If you have a V-8 it would not work too well, It would be like putting 5.88 gears in your truck and NOT putting on big tires. Lots of revs little speed.
