I've been reading this board a long time and I know it's been discussed before...but after looking through 20 search threads for "perfect" I've struck out. My question is.....what's a good substitute for it? Nearest dealer is 65 miles away and I really don't want to have to drive if I can sub something for it. thanks.

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Thanks Don, I appreciate it.
Tommays....I may end up having to do just that, but gonna give Don's suggestion a try first. Although in this one horse town I may not find it either. Thank you both for the quick replies.

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Guess I'm gonna hijack my own thread....but was out there splitting the halves apart on an 2000 alpha gen II. When I lowered the gear housing, no oring came off on the shaft. I thought there was supposed to be one. Looked up in the drive housing and didn't see one up there either. Soooooo does she or doesn't she?

It's amazing you're taking apart a $2000 piece of equipment you know nothing about and don't even have or use a service manual....... I would only do that in an emergency. It's way to easy to miss something when you take it apart, and that small item could cost you the whole unit. Much like the small quad ring between the 2 halves of your drive. It's cost many a DIYer without a manual a drive before they realized one was even there.

Merc Alpha I Gen II Service Manual

Ok, Laddies...WHEW, thought I was going nuts for a moment. Also Don, I found the aviator Permatex at the local NAPA. I'm sure I'll be back with another question. Once again, thanks guys.

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Ahhhhh....but I'm not Don. I downloaded one of your links to the service manual long, long ago. Not a total idiot here.....85% maybe. And I was just about to scream on another thread that the kit I got didn't have the quad ring in it...but I found it.....HALLELUJAH!!! Now, since I got your attention, I do have another question though. Regarding the bearing carrier, the one that's in there still looks perfectly good. Do I REALLY need to change it out with the new one from the kit? I'm asking cuz it says something about using a special tool to seat it....which I don't have.

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

change it its the only one on the drive thats easy :D

did you get a compleat merc kit  it comes with the seals pressed in

the screwdriver trick in the manual did not work on mine

i had to grab it with a pair of channellock pliers and spin it a few times to get it out

then use some 2-4-c grease and it will push in by hand or you can turn the old one upside down and use it to push it in

tommays

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Yeah Tom, the kit I ordered has the new face plate and stainless housing, too. Next time I'll know to order the cheaper kit w/o those 2 items. Not a thing wrong with the housing and other than cleaning up the face plate a little, nothing wrong with it either. Not trying to pick, just clarify, but the manual says to use Perfect Seal on the carrier and you say 2-4-C. Does it really matter?

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

the picture on page 3B-6 shows A=2-4-C on the carrier and C=perfect seal on the gaskets for the pump

also look at the top of gasket 24 it comes precoated with a sealer so you only need perfect seal on the bottom of it

two drill bits that fit into the 6mm holes for the pump bolts make it much easery to line up everything and spin the shaft to fit the inpeller into the houseing without driveing youself crazy

look at it carefully because it also shows that your supposed to use adhesive to glue the quad ring into the lower (item 6)

dont forget to use perfect seal on the screws so they come out next time

the picture is the only real refence of what to use were

tommays

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Ahhhh yeah now I see. Definitely don't want to cover up the little weep hole in the face plate and lower gasket either, I see. Thanks so much for all your help guys. Now, just to foresee the future, the next question/cry for help won't come till I start to try and reinstall the gear housing.....lol

Re: Merc Perfect Seal

Was looking locally for a replacement for OMC Gasket Sealing Compound and determined that the
PERMATEX® AVIATION FORM-A-GASKET® Sealant was the way to go for that also. Had to check 4 auto parts stores before I found one that had it in stock (CarQuest). One of the other chains had it at some of their stores but not at the majority of them. Probably best to call first, before driving around like I did.

BTW, I called Bombardier, & one of the guys there siad that permatex made the OMC Gasket Sealing Compound.

Also in the auto trade it is called Perfect Seal #4 and it is the same as the Johnson/Evinrude "Gasket Sealing Compound". Aviation Permatex is completely different.

ok Seahorse, now I'm back to confused. When I called Bombardier (OMC) they told me that Perfect Seal #4 was the same thing as the OMC Gasket Sealing Compound (which I assume is the same as the Johnson/Evinrude GSC). BUT I can't find any reference to Perfect Seal #4 on the Permatex web site. Several auto parts stores told me they had no reference to that particular product. And I called Permatex and they couldn't find #4 either.

I had heard that the Aviation Sealing compound was an appropriate substitute, and it seems to have the same properties as the OMC stuff (non-hardening, gasket sealer instead of gasket maker, presumably thinner than the ones that come in tubes since it comes in that small can with the applicator brush). I did see some other number Perfect Seal products (maybe #1 & #2?) but they came in tubes rather than the can.

Now I hear Perfect Seal #4 again. Did the name/ number change on this product, cause I looked pretty hard for it and couldn't find any clue that it's even made anymore. Does (did) it come in a can or tube?

Color me confused  .
