Re: merc problem

Unplug the switch on the engine cowl and see if that stops it they live in a wet place and are prone to short out

Re: merc problem

Was this resolved?

I had a solenoid go out on me last year--the starter wouldn't stop running. My motor has three identical solenoids: starter, tilt/trim up, and tilt/trim down. Diagnosed it by swapping the solenoids around. Now I carry a couple of extra spares.

Might be that your solenoid needs replacing, if it's not a short in the tilt/trim switch...of course, we don't know if you have a battery switch...
