I know this is a "J & E" forum, but the guys over at the Merc forum are either not as freiendly and free with information as you guys, or,,,,,,, here's my question.

Have any of you ever added an electric starter to a mid 70's 7.5 merc? How hard, how expensive?

Thanks....

Re: Merc Question

I think the reason you have not got any response is that there is probably not much call for that on a smaller motor. Someone will eventually see the post and respond. I kinda doubt it would be cost effective, though. Might need a new flywheel among other parts... Hang in there...

Re: Merc Question

You're probably right Rick.
I have a near perfect 7.5 sitting in my shed and mom and dad getting on in age. Thought I would fix them up with a good electric start outboard if it wasn't hard / costly .

Thanks....

Re: Merc Question

I saw an electric start 7.5hp the other day. If I were you I would go have a look over at mercruiserparts.com and see what it is you have and need. If there's a lot to it, your best bet is often to find an old junk engine. I think a lot of the parts are the same for the 9.8 so that should widen your horizons.

Thanks Paul.
I took a glance at that site. Some parts not available, as I understood their site. Didn't see a clear picture of mounting etc.
Will keep eye out for a 9.8 bargain parts motor.
