I am changing the bellows on my Merc 470 with alpha one gen one drive. Is there a substitute for the Merc shift cable removal tool or do I have to order one from my local shop?

they claim you can unscrew the plastic guides on the eom cable to use a regular socket, other than those, use the special tool or weld 2 deep sockets together.

This forum has been extremely helpful to me, so if I can pay them back with some of my experience, so be it..:)

If this is any help its basically a 9/16 socket (I think, really sorry can't remember without looking but it's whatever the nut size is) welded to a strong box spanner. Cost, an old box spanner from the toolbox and the loss of a socket from one of my sets.

Used a 1/2" deep socket. Wasn't quite long enough to get over the end of the cable and still use the ratchet, but I was able to get a pair of channel locks on the socket (with the cable sticking through it) and it came off pretty easy. If I couls weld, I would certainly add a little length.

I took my welding to my local car service garage, you would call them a shop. He did it no problem for me. :)

I brazed a auto lug nut to the end of a sears craftsman deepwell socket, with MAPP Gas and a brazing rod. That way the little white plastic tube on the shift cable could come right up the middle Then I used a cresent hammer [wrench] and unscrewed the brass cable nut,
