1987 Alpha 1. 2008 5.7L 350 MPI. I kept the shift plate from my old engine. I am having trouble putting it back in the original place on the new risers on the engine. The coil and other wires are in the way. Did Merc make a smaller shift plate for later model engines that I could use instead. Or is there some other option. Thanks Roman
The original is from 1987.

Re: Merc Shift plate Question

It doesn't have to be attached to the engine at all. I have seen them screwed to the transom. As long as the shift cables reach without any sharp bends, that's all that is needed. Wiring can be lengthend if needed.

Re: Merc Shift plate Question

All it does is help make the shift quicker from either forward or reverse, back to neutral. It's a spring loaded unit only when in gear, When in exactly neutral, the mechanism should be in it's neutral position and not spring loaded in either direction.
