To replace the pick up (Stator) in a Mercruiser V-8 thunderbolt IV unit do you have to take the Distributor out? To get it past the shaft or will it comw out through the top with out taking out? Thank you.

remove the rotor then remove the pickup. the dist doesn't have to be removed to change the pickup.the rotor is some times hard to remove, use two screwdrivers across from each other to pry up the rotor.get a new rotor, as the original usually gets bent in the removal process.

Info. yes you must take the dist. out, remove clip under the rotor and pull shaft shaft out through the bottom to remove the ignition sensor (stator) on thunderbolt Dist. I stand corrected, thank you.
