Merc tilt pin

My 115 Merc has manual tilt/trim. When I bought it, it had no tilt pin for adjustments. When I installed the tilt pin on the first adjustment up from full tilt the boat handled much better at WOT, but the throttle was responding funny and would not go into reverse at all. I found this was because there are two "ears", for lack of a better term, that wrap around the tilt pin when gears are changed and one of these was bent so badly that the tilt pin would not fit into it. Does someone out there who's familiar with these motors know if this part can be removed and replaced. I got so far as detaching the lever that comes from the L/U, but from there I see no way of removing it.

Hi Smike
Do you really need to remove this piece? Are you sure you can't just bend it back? If you can post the model# of your 115 merc I'll see if I can find the info for you.

Re: Merc tilt pin

alcan,
I don't have the model # with me, but if it helps it's an inline 6, 115hp, model year 1979 with Thunderbolt ignition. Come to think of it, I don't have the model # at home either, how do I go about finding that out? Does serial number help? Thanks alot. Also, I'm going to try and bent it back tomorrow, I'll let you know how that goes.

Re: Merc tilt pin

Hi Smike
With most outboards the model & ser.# identify the unit in question. With Merc especialy the ser#. All the info, parts, etc goes by ser#. This # can be found on the ID plate fastened to the motor (usually around the transome clamps some where. It is also stamped on the block. If you don't have it handy, just post your email add. I'll take an educated stab at sending you a picture. You need to find this # though. With out it you will have a real hard time getting the right parts and info.
