Just took the outdrive off to do waterpump and noticed that the starboard trim arm moves at a different pace and travel distance than the port side. Should I bleed the system? Please advise.

Re: Merc Trim Arms

I was always of the understanding that most hydraulic lift systems pretty much "slef-bleed" when the pumps are activated {more info, please from experts}.

It would seem more possible that you have old grease, gunk, rust, fishing line, etc dragging the ram down. Or the possibility of internal leak in that portion of the system?

Just a shot in the dark. Don't be mean...

If you are just operating the trim with the outdrive removed, it is totally normal that one will move faster than the other.

Most trim systems are self bleeding, but without knowing what drive or year you have, it's impossible to say for sure on your system.

How does it work when they are connected to your drive?

Like I said before, it is normal for them to extend different distances when they aren't hooked to the drive.

Completely normal for one to move faster than the other. The one with the least resistance will move first, then the other. Unless the slow one has a corroded end cap and the inside of the cap is grabbing/binding on the piston rod, don't worry about it.
