Merc trim pump part testing

Im looking for info on how to test Merc Type A Power trim pump parts. I have read about using a "growler" to test the armature, but i don't have a growler! And is there a way to test the field and frame assembly! I have lots of misc. trim pump parts and would like to test them individually without having to build a motor just to see if it will operate! Any help will surely be appreciated!

Start with a simple continuity test. There should be no continuity between any part of the armature's commutator and ground. The field coil should also not have any continuity to ground. Make sure one side of the field it is not grounded, or you will not have a proper test. look for a bimetal overload device on the field coil. These sometimes get corroded or insulated with dirt. They need to be gently cleaned with an emery board.

A growler allows you to find current leakage between the individual armature coils. Usually the continuity test will find these as well. If the motor has been submerged and has some shorts, you might bake it a 225 degrees for an hour and see if it gets better.
