Well, they usually are sold as a set. You could do some price shopping here on Iboats, or www.mercstuff.com . As you have found out, crimps, splicing, etc. just don't last very long. The only way to do it right is to replace the sender along with the wire. It is time consuming, and you will be working with limited space. Do you have acess to the inner transom plate behind the engine ? Can you get yourself back there ? In a nutshell, the wires go from the sender through a rubber gromet that is secured by a small metal plate and through the transom. They "come out" inside the boat by the u-joint shaft. On some boats getting to this is a royal pain. Checkout your access and see if you want to do this .

Gotta be a bit of a contortionist to do this job, but it's not hard if you can reach where you need to reach. I saved a lot of money and got mine off Ebay. Brand new, sealed OEM Mercruiser units are on there all the time at a greatly discounted price, and they come with clear installation instructions in the package and a brand new rubber grommet. I paid less than $100 for the set. Also, you can buy the set, or you can get just the damaged one individually. Word of advice...if the second one is even remotely questionable, do both at the same time to prevent this headache all over again 6 months from now.
