i currently have a 74 johnson 50 horse. i am getting ready to buy another rig with a, i believe 76 model (serial 4707922) 50 horse merc. i know the two boats being different weights are gonna have a affect, but as far as the 2 motors themselves, i was wondering how they compare in the torque and overall power output.

You would need expensive diagnostic equipment to tell the difference, Monk. Both are good engines, but I believe that the JohnnyRude twin loopers are among the best outboards ever made. Merc inline 4s of that period, I think, were cross scavenged, thus thirstier.

thanks jb. i actually like a omc a lot lot better thab i do a mercury, but i am going from an aluminum bassboat to a fiberglass, and with the weight difference i was wanting to keep which ever engine would run the stoutest on the fiberglass.

if you are use to working on the Johnson, you will be lost on the merc.
