Merc vs Volvo

I've been to a few boat dealers and I noticed that the Volvos tend to be on higher end boats while the Merc tend to be on "cheaper" brands.

Is this tend to be the case?

On most boats that offer both, Mercs are actually slightly higher depending on which drive you are comparing . . .

So I can't and should not judge the quality of the boat by the manufacturer of the outdrive?

Yes, you should not. Judge boat builder quality by everything but the engine and drive . . .

"Judge boat builder quality by everything but the engine and drive . . ." I could not agree more. A Cobalt has exactly the same drive/engine as a no name.

Engines are basically the same, all GM. Drives are different. Both MerCruiser and Volvo have excellent reputations. There are a lot more MC units out there but that is more marketing and availabilty more than durability.

Volvo service is a bit harder to find but not much.

The real deal is to find a dealer you trust and buy from them.

Both are fine and of high quality. They each have their attributes.

If you want a little history, they both come from the same designer-Charles Strang.

Now Now they do take that dust and fill up the soda bottle's with it...
