In light of the fact the Merc 225 FS is made by Yamaha, why do these guys claim diffrent MPG numbers? Yamaha claims approx 4.3 mpg range and Merc claims approx 3.7 mpg at optimum cruise. What is the truth? What are the major differences between these products, or is there any difference at all?

Same same, right down to the gear ratio (Well...I guess the Merc is black).

Take MPG with a grain of salt. Different boats, different props, different water, different wind, different quality fuel, different operator, different companies/marketing. Besides, I always thought gallons/hour was a better measure of fuel consumption for a boat. ;)

BASS & WALLEYE BOATS, ran these 2 on 2 identicle boats in march or april, and had a comparison of the 2 in writting........they didn't match up either. But they also were telling that the Merc guys chose "X" prop, and the Yammy guys chose "Y" prop, and of course, the numbers came out different, but the conclusion, as always, was either outboard fills the bill in the same way dependant upon your application, which to me, was a waste of time to do an article on the same engine in different clothes......???

I find it hard to believe that either maker would put a figure on them. There are too many variables in boats/set ups to make a claim.

Most boats that are identical do not weigh the same, especially fiberglass models.

I recall touring a Sea Ray plant in which they weighed every boat. There was a supposed tolerance of five percent and they didn't care about where the excess/minus weight was.

Re: Merc vs. Yamaha 4 stroke 225 Fuel Economy

Guys, I must apologize here...The testing was the Honda 225 vs. Yammy 225 I'm sure. I will check when I get back home tomarrow night, and post when I find the article for sure.........
djohns, why is it a high quality magazine would not take into account (maybe they do, but don't say it)the differences in 2 boats, supposedly setup the same, as in Identicle models, same weight of payload, fuel, and what-not. I guess that could be over-looked by the inexperienced, such as I, to have never thought 2 boats meant to be the same model, would come off the line with different weights that would affect performance issues substantially.......very good info, djohns.... :)

It could be that Merc made some modifications on electronics, but the engine block is the same one as in Yamaha F225. I red something about in Powerboating or Motorboating magazine.

Re: Merc vs. Yamaha 4 stroke 225 Fuel Economy

Thanks for all the reply's guys. I am concidering one of these outboards...I may wait now in light of the fact Mercury's project "X" should be out in Feb. I do have a 230HP limit on my boat and I hear the new Mercury is going to be a 250 out of the gate :( Any ideas about the eventual HP range of this new engine lineup from merc? I guess the existing merc / yama f 225 has the benefits of having the major bugs worked out... any comments ???
