I have a 79 Merc. 140hp. My problum is that the motor refuses to rev up to speed, but likes to sputter with a load, but will idel and run slowly all day long. I have rebuilt the carbs, fuel pump, put in new plugs tested the compression, blown out the lines, tested for spark and set the timing. What am I missing? Is there reed valves that may be bad? are thear jets that don't come in the kits that I might have missed? Oh ya if the boat once planes out it quites sputtering but still won't wind up. Thanks in advance.

Hello frustrated
Welcome to the forum
No acceleration, idles well but when put to full power dies down.A few thoughts
High or low speed needles set too lean
Dirt or packing behind needles and seats
High speed nozzle obstructed
Choke partly closed
Improper timing and synch
points improperly gaped or dirty
Did you use compressed air to ensure all of the passages of the carbs were clean.
Good luck
