Well, i need to pick your brain. I have a 1989 5.7 Mercrusier that i just finished doing the top end on. I did almost everything by the book, all wires are correct, all plugs are new, valves adjusted perfectly,However;it will not start. It back fires a little that about it. I marked the distributor before i removed it, but i did not marked the rotor position. is this my problem? Does it need to be retimed? The engine turns very smooth and if i hold the choke open it spits bursts of white smoke and gas out of the top of the carb. help

If it is back firing the timing is not right. Make sure you did not cross and plug wires and you have the firing order right. Put a time lite to her as you crank it over and make adjustment from specs till she starts. <br />Hope this helps!!

Thanks i will give that a try, i also just heard from the shop that sold me the heads, they said that they forgot to tell me that my old rocker arms are not correct for the newer style heads and that they have new ones for me. Everything seemed fine to me the adjustment went well. hope i did not hurt anything. Thanks again.

Re: Merc want start

ok got it started it runs fine but still over heats, the water pump does not pump water up to the engine. Should water shoot out of the plastic pipe that goes to the engine from the water pump. I ran the muffs and watch the plastic hose with the engine on. Just a trickle, i don't think this is correct.

What temp is it running at? If it is around 160 go ahead and put it in th water and see what happens. If you are above 160 check the thermostat, hoses, pump, ect. Trouble shoot till you find the cause.

If you have spent so much on engine rebuild and you have a temp issue why not change the water pump it's something that has to be done quite frequent anyway.
