Just wondering what you feel would be the average life span of the water impeller in fresh water. I live in Canada and fish clean water lakes so there is very little sand etc going threw the pump.

Thanks for your opinions!!

I have been going on about 10 years on my 75hp but I am feeling it is needing to be replaced but only because I am parinoid. Still pumps water just fine though. Everyone thus far have said they have a 1 year life span.

Fresh or salt water usage shouldn't matter, the impeller is a rubber part. It can last for years if run frequently and always with a good water supply.

My advice would be change it every 2 years in fresh water and every year in salt water. The only reason to change more frequently in salt is that you should remove the leg to grease the drive shaft splines annually. Once the leg is off might as well change the impeller while you are at it.

Cheers~!

Accepted "rule of thumb" is to replace it every two years as a measure of cheap insurance. The impeller may last for years as mentioned above, OR it may fail earlier resulting in catastrophic engine damage. They are so inexpensive and easy to replace why tempt fate.

Re: Merc water impeller?

Thanks everyone for your input. Mine is 4 years old and as mentioned its cheap insurance. I have never changed one before ( 1st boat ) so I guess I'll go looking for some info.
Thanks, Dodger1234
