I have another old mercury 150 that starts and runs great with the flush muffs on it but won't start in the lake. Give me some ideas to check out please :(

WHEN YOU PUT IT ON THE LAKE PLEASE TELL
ME WHAT YOU DO TO TRY TO START IT.
P.S. FIRST PUMP THE FUEL LINE THEN
HOLD THE CHOKE BUTTON DOWN UNTIL IT
FIRE'S MAKE SURE YOU GOT THE HIGH
SPEED IDLE ALL THE WAY UP.
PUT SOME NEW CHAMPION PLUG IN AND I
WOULD BET YOU WILL LIKE WHAT HAPPEN.
REXA1925@IWON.COM
GOOD LUCK :D ;)

REX's starting procedure is vital. Otherwise, it will never start. But if it still will not start using that pocedure, it may have a plugged exaust port. This can be checked by testing vaccum at the carbs.

Is the lake altitude much higher then your house?I've seen a lot of start problems at higher altitudes above 4000'.

I agree with Rex & 12footer.
I had the same problem.
Ran fine off the muffs but was hard to start when emmersed in water. Had to keep it partially choked.
Something to do with water pressure acting against the exhaust.
I cleaned and rebuilt my carbs. End of problem.
Good Luck
Michael

Re: merc won't start in lake

ok I went through the normal starting procedure ---the carbs had been restored with new jets ----old merc mechanic ----new plugs -----it will start run and idle with the muffs on but not when the boat is set into the water. It will start but will go dead---use wd 40 to start ---if ya can ever get it to forward and take the fuel it will run fine on top end
thank you and keep helping

Re: merc won't start in lake

It seems there is further resistance to starting RPM in the water. What is turnover speed compared to when the muffs are on? If slower in lake it may not be getting enough gas to start at slower RPM. Was the motor removed for the work to be performed? Is it in gear when trying to start? Once it starts will it tick over? Is it easy to start once warm?

All answers will help us help you. :D

Liam
