I have an '82 model 25hp Merc w/ electric start. How can I find out if it is equipped to charge the battery?

------------------
Find the birds & you've found the fish!
If you can't locate the alternator by looking under the cowling...then try using a digital volt meter and read the battery voltage with the engine shut off. Then, start the engine and once again read the battery voltage. If your engine is equipped with a functioning alternator, then your battery voltage will read higher with the engine running vs. not running. I'm not familiar with the proper charging rate for that set up, but I'm guessing you should read somthing like 13.6 - 14.2 volts with the engine running at a fast idle.

Hope this helps.

Walt
I've never installed one, but I'm sure it could be done. I'd really be surprised if your Merc was origninally equipped with electric start with no charging system.

Walt
Like Walt stated, it would be a real surprise to find an electric start outboard with no charging system. But if for some reason you don't have one, it involves pulling the flywheel to add alternator coils underneath, then the appropriate rectifier/regulator to charge the battery. Should run about $150 or so + labor in your application. (if you don't feel like bending wrenches yourself) I'd bet you already have juice, though!
