I need a new starter for my Merc500, 50hp, serial number A131168. The origional starter is a 10 tooth. Does anyone know the Merc part number for my starter.

Thanks,

Tom

Assuming the A in your serial is a 4 because I can't find any that start with A.... what year is this motor?

It's a 1985 4cyl, 2 stroke. I just rechecked the number it's an A - A131168. The starter does not have any numbers on it. But I've notice that some of the starters available are 9 tooth and some a 10 tooth.

Take it to a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators. I did and saved about $30 on the cost of a new oneThey'll replace anything that's worn out.

You could also ask a merc shop mechanic who has been around for a while whether to mesh with the flywheel, 9, or 10 tooth matters. I don't think it does, I remember the bendix size was different, and this meant that you needed less battery to turn the nine tooth, but the 10 tooth cranked the engine faster.
