Hello all.

Well finally decided to tear the carb down and clean it.

Well noticed when I was taking it off, the linkage that went into the accelerator pump was very loose, to the point it would just pull out of the carb

Well tore it all down, and tried to remember exactly how the linkage went, but didnt. Got it back together and now the accelerator pump actually has some resistance to it I think that is good.

But Also took off the elec choke cover, I put it back on by turning it a few times to tighten the spring up in it, (is that correct) and have the linkage where I think it goes, I have a manual for it, put it isnt very clear on linkage. I have attached a few pics, can anyone tell me if it looks right before I put it back on the boat?

Thank a million guys!

Dennis

Also, thought I'd add, now when I move the throttle linkage, it seems stiff and has a spot where it seems to click? is that only because there is no fuel in the carb?

Ok readjusted the choke. I had it way to tight. :)

I actually turned it tight, was ment to turn it just till the spring contacts the level then set to hash marks...

now if the rest of the linkage is right Its ready to remount on boat..

Re: Mercarb linkage help.. UPDATE

Ok well puther back on and took her out..

She fired right up, better then before.

Idles now at around 1100k little high, but the bog on take off is all but gone. Put it in gear, throttle up a tad and gun it and she goes, no bog .

When I come back down and throttle back to idle she is now idleing at around 2k rpms. I know that is high.

I didnt mess with any of the screws for idle, could the po have turned up the idel to attempt to get around the fact that the acellerator pump wasnt working right?

Idle is way high, not even knowing your motor drive combo. Any time you tear a carb down, you need to go back and adjust the idle speed and idle mixture. Also good to go through on spring commisioning.

Doubt it's the idle adjustment screw...

Is your throttle cable adjust correctly, it is sensitive and will rev high if not set right.

Also is the cable free and clear, you shouldn't get a variance in your idle from throttle up to throttle down

Let me guess, you don't have a manual..... Right?????
I say that because had you looked at the manual you would have seen something like this.

There is also a place in the service manual that explains how to adjust the throttle cable.
But, in order to help you, we have to know what you are working on. Year and what engine would sure help. I know it's a Mercruiser, who else would use a Mercarb ????????

I have the manual as I stated :) but that pic doesnt show very well how they connect behind the drawing and that is what I was wondering about.. Plus doesnt say wether or not the choke is closed in the pics or open, which to me helps with figuring out the orinataion of the linkage.

its a 1986 3.0 140(181) on a four winns with a alpha 1

As for the cable, I dont know if its adjusted right or not, it did not do that prior to the teardown and rebuild. I will look in the manual for how to adjust the cable.

Have a buddy coming out tomorrow to help with the adjustments. A quick check on the idel screw it was out four turns. I set it in to it just seats then backed out a 1/4 turn. To gauge it with, it helped a little and cut run on time down some as well.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Mercarb linkage help..

Get yourself a service tach to set the idle. Dash tachs are usually off in my experience.
