NOT ACETONE!!!!

I just use hot water. If I have a real bad one then i'll grab a gallon of diesel. After that Its just some gumout or your favorite spray can carb cleaner and compressed air.
Thats assuming you can identify every passage and what it does, and not just blow air into every hole you see.

Hi , I have the same issue I want to clean my carbs on a 87 115 hp line 6 theres 3 of them. Should I spray hog wash in them while its running or remove them and let them soak? Boat been sitting up since 2002.

Spend the money on the cleaner. If you dont have every passage perfectly clean you will be doing it again. I have one in my garage and it's been used on many projects.

find a shop that has a 5 gallon bucket of cleaner and get them to soak your parts overnight,or,go down to your local chrysler dealer and buy a can of combustion chamber conditioner, it works exellent for cleaning carb parts

the easiest way to explain what material a carb is made out of is like this. Its almost like glazed pot metal. Acetone will eat the glazing off and ruin the carb. Some carb cleaners (that you soak in) will eat the glazing off as well. Diesel will not eat the glazing off. neither will hot water.

Use any over the counter carb cleaner....WD40...or whatever takes takes the crud out. I am assuming you will be replacing all the gaskets anyways.

Well fellow memebers,: I cleaned the carbs and still have the same problem bogs out in gear. The guy I got the boat from (87 Astro glass) told me its a bad cylinder but I was hoping that it needed a tune up and carb cleaned. :(

Re: mercury 115 hp compression test

Well fellow boat members I did a compression test and this was my findings.
#1 120, #2 120, #3 120, #4 10, #5 100, I stop after 5 . So I need to rebuild right or can I just cruise it and rebuild over the winter?(

So I need to rebuild right or can I just cruise it and rebuild over the winter?

You can do what ever you want to do. But I would find the reason for the low compression. If you end up having a hole in your piston all your going to do is dump gasoline into the oil and eventually its going to explode on you.

Re: mercarb rebuild help needed

squirt some oil in the low hole, check the compression again, if it goes up the rings are not sealing, if it stays the same it is a valve problem. btw for accurate results check compression with wide open throttle,6 puffs per cylnder, warm engine
good luck

Re: mercarb rebuild help needed

in addition to others comments it could also be a cracked head, blown head gasket, or cracked block. Not sure the numbering of the cylinder sequence on that engine, but are the 10PSI and 100PSi on the same side. If that's the case It may just be a head gasket. And are the 2 low readings next to each other?

Re: mercarb rebuild help needed

No offense Chris, but you kind of just hijacked yfzjim's thread, which I am real interested in because I am a couple of weeks away from pulling my mercarb and trying to rebuilt it too.

It would have been better if you started a new thread.

yfzjim, keep posting on your carb cleaning efforts and any tips.

By the way, where did you get your carb rebuilt kit from? I cant seem to find the one I think I need, (804844) on Iboats.
