Hello im in the process of rebuilding my carb on my 1987 165 3.7l 4cyl and its the original mercarb. It has the accelerator pump with the 90 degree bend on the end of it, is there supposed to be a check ball under the accelerator pump on this one ?? i see something that looks like a little ball from the outside ( see attached pic) i pressed in on it a little and it didnt wanna budge ?:confused: also is there some sorta trick to removing the little tee and spring under the venturi and is there a check ball under that one ?:confused:

Re: mercarb rebuild question

There is no ball under the 4cc pump (yours) only under the 2cc pump. I do not believe you are supposed to fool with that "little T", There was nothing about it in the service manual rebuild instructions. just clean and blow out the passages is all that I did..

Re: mercarb rebuild question

Thanks, I hate these damn generic parts kits, it only came with the 4cc accelerator pump (90 degree bend) but supplies two check balls in the kit. The kit did however supply the t and spring i mentioned which is why i asked about removing it. Thanks again

Re: mercarb rebuild question

I don't recall that in my kit, but I have no clue on how to remove it. I followed the instructions in Manual #8, step by step and they don't say anything about it, so I did not fool with it. I had lots of stuff left over too LOL.

Re: mercarb rebuild question

just tried a little tug with a small pair of needle nose and she didnt budge so im not messing with it either, ill hose it out good with carb clean and air.

Which pin did you use inside of your needle valve for the float, the solid one or the one with the spring ?? mine had the solid one, so im thinking ill go that route.

Ill have a handful of leftovers as well, not a fan i tell ya ! lol thanks for the help bud

Yeah it looks like that "T" is staked in with a punch. My carb originally had the solid rod so that is what I put back in.

There is a passage way under that T with a spring and a ball I believe. I always take mine out and clean it. I use a needle nose and it usually popsout for me. But I suppose if you blow the passage ways out good it should be OK.

Re: mercarb rebuild question

I worked all night to finish up the carb, it was so dirty im surprised it ran at all ! I did a little more reading on the float needle and found you can use either one. You just have to set your float accordingly, for the solid pin style you set your float level at 10mm and with the spring style its set at 14mm. As for the float drop both setups are set at 27mm. Off to camp to give it a try, thanks again !
