MerControl Shifter Problem

I am still having some problems with the shifting on my 1974 Merc 500 engine. My Mercontrol shifter shifts into forward after the forward detent, and shifts into reverse after the reverse detent. Is there any way of fixing this or adjusting this. I check all the parts and replace the mercontrol and the linkage in the top of the engine for the shift shaft and still the same results. I am just concerned that after the detent is when the engine starts to rev and I dont want to be shifting when the rpms pick up. Any help?

Anyone? Adjusting the brass barrel at the engine just adjust the position of the throw, not how much throw. Does anyone elses do this or should it line up on the detents?

Re: MerControl Shifter Problem

I did not think the amount of shift throw was adjustable. There are no detents on most MerControls. There is a spot where the throttle cable starts to move for forward and reverse. Perhaps the throttle cable has too much preload?
