I have a 1966 merc650se motor. It has a 2 lever throttle control. The cables were cracked and rusted on the inside so I have new ones now and I was wondering, where the cables hook into the motor, you have one on top of the other, the top one works the carb and the bottom works the forward reverse,(I think),the bottom cable, and they are the barrel fittings that slide down fairly tight in place then have a pin that goes through them to hold them, then it has the part of the cable that actually moves when you're moving the levers,it has a little wire end looking fitting that on the bottom cable just sits on a little fitting that slides horizontally thats attached to my motor. There is nothing there to hold it in place,I think the top cable which has a bolt and nut at its end will pretty much hold it down but this does not seem right to me.Does anyone know if it is,are both cables supposed to be locked in place by something. Thanks in advance for your time.

Re: mercontrol throttle cable hook ups

Hello,

I am currently working on a mercury 650 65hp and had to take the throttle/shift cables off.... so if I think I can tell you what it should look like.

First off you are correct top is for throttle and bottom is for the shifter... The bottome one should have a bolt that comes up through the bracket it slides on.... on-top of the bolt should be a "special washer", and a nut screws over it. This washer has an arm that sticks out so that when you loosen the nut you can slide it one way or the other to get the cable free. Anyways the washer sticks out over the groove where the cable lays on. That way it kind of sandwiches it in so that it can't pop up.

So my guess is that its this washer thing that you are missing from what you are describing. And please forgive me for using washer to describe the part because I don't have the exact term as to what it is called. I could try to take a picture if you wanted..
