Mercruise won't go into forward gear or reverse.

I have a 1984 Rinker witn a Mercruiser 140 and i took it to the river today. I was giving it throttle all of a sudden the prop stopped. I might have hit something, i don't know. I put it back to neutral and put it in forward gear and it wont go into gear. forward gear or reverse. Any ideas? Thanks

Ayuh,..... It's Broken.....

Not in any particular order,... It could be,....
A Blown Coupler,...
A Bad prop,..
More likely, a chipped or broken Gear in the drive,... Or a broken Shaft...

Ayuh,... Kinda hard to answer that Question,.. Til you diagnose Exactly what the problem is....

I think is the throttle cable. When i hit the throttle it will rev up..

I just had the same issue. With your boat OFF, and the key OUT OF THE IGNITION, put the boat in forward and see if the prop locks into place. Then, put it in reverse and see if it locks in place the other way. If so, it is most likely the gears are stripped.
