I am having fits trying to get my old mercruiser shift adjustmentight. I have the barrul that fits in slot as high up as I can get it without interfering with the top cable travel. It just seems there is not enough movement in cable to get both forward and reverse. I am getting reverse without throttle opening but forward is not engaged until throttle comes on making for a very uneasy shift. Is swomething worn out down below? I have the mercruiser shop manual and have followed adjustment procedure with no luck. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Mercruiser 1 shift adjust problem

it might be ya need to replace yer lower cable. or
when i was trying (key word there) to adj. my shift cable (model I). i was havein horrible fits with it. could not get it to adj. i either had fwd. or reverse. so, i finally gave up and took it to the dealer for a new shift cable. (tail between my legs, so to speak) that was the consenses here, a new lower shift cable. well, $65 later the original cable i had was adjusted.
i ask the merc dealer what was up and they said they knew how to do and i didn't. i figured that part out. the only usefull info i got out of the dealer was.
adj. while underload in the water.
not on land like i was doing.......
nothin ventured, nothin gained i guess.
i look fwd to the next time i need to adj. it and wonder if i have learned anything from the experience.
ya may still need a cable. but if yer going about it wrong like i was, ya might try throwin it in the drink and tryin to adjust it...... good luck....
