Merc used a resistor wire, they didn't use internally resisted coils.

PS Hate to tell you, but that engine in the picture is only a 4 cylinder

All the coils I own require an external resistor. I would like to source one like originally used in the 1970s that did not require the addition of one. This will be used on a 77' 165hp six.

Here is a pic of it and the wiring:

Ayuh,.... Sure looks like a 3.0l, 140hp to me....

That's a pic you took of another engine, and uploaded it by mistake, right Fordiesel? ;)

You aren't making sense here. You want the original type of coil that didn't require an external resistor, problem is the OEM coils DID require an external resistor. That resistor wire that Mercruiser uses IS an external resistor,

So then I am not understanding. I place an automotive coil in place leaving all factory wiring intact, coil smokes in 45 minutes. If I I put the wrong HEI dist back in, it runs all last season. They did not cut the factory wires, they twisted wires and taped them thru the factory looped connector and hooked it to a spade for the HEI.

All I want is to put it back to factory. Where is the external resistor the factory used?
