Re: Mercruiser 140 ignition/starter wiring issues

Im not sure what is being refered to with the reboring, if its refering to the mounting hole then its still stock, the remaining stud from the bolt went right through the top. I tried to shim but I had the same results. I think one of the new solenoids also fried, after a dozen or so tries the starter has completely stopped turning and no click from the solenoid.

reboring=redrilling. I assume it's back to normal then (in terms of mounting), and you can fit it exactly as original. If so, good.
you can always engage the starter by shorting red to yel/red right on the starter or two yel/red wires on the solenoid (jumper wire)
long story short... your starter needs a doctor, poking around it won't help anymore I guess

Re: Mercruiser 140 ignition/starter wiring issues

I got it started today, I found that when i reassembled it I had the clip in the wrong place on the shaft and it wasnt locking. now all is good. I'm having second thoughts now whether it really is a marine starter though, I thought marine starters are usually stamped..... I bought a starter from a 66 chevelle which looked identical for assembly reference and even the casing was the same so either the starter on the boat isn't original or it's identical to an automotive one. I cleaned it and siliconed all the joints as a precaution.
