dwell is the duration of trigger that is charging the oil (regardless of points, a monkey flipping a switch or an electronic trigger), its measured in degrees. for the 4-cylinder 3.0, that is 30 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

you can have much less dwell and still have spark, just no where near a hot enough spark as the coil has not had adequate time to charge
