Mercruiser 140 - Mocha Frapachino in my oil pan.

Hi all,

Recently purchased what I thought was another great Craigslist find. 19' Citation Bowrider with Mercruiser 140. Saw ad one evening...rushed over...getting dark....raining. Had a quick lookover...they fired it up on hose for me....now really raining and really dark. Bought it and brought it home.

First thing I figure out in daylight was when I pulled the oil dipstick.....mocha frapa coffee in there instead of oil. No smell of fuel and was elevated above full.

Drained the coffee ..... changed the filter.....filled er up with new "cheaper 10w-40" for flushing puposes...fired er up and quickly noticed that it was not pumping water. UGH.

Replaced impellar(only part of one fin left on old one) ...new gear lube....fired up started pumping right away....some REALLY nasty rusty water but cleared up soon enough. Obviously rust out of the cast-iron manifold/riser.

Additional info:
Compression is good 119-117-115-113.
Two of the plugs were wet with oil...two dry.
Oil pressure starts at 40 with fresh oil....after it warms up drops a bit to about 36-36psi.
Starts and runs fine...a bit rough on cold idle but purrs after warming up.
Water is exiting strongly on the starboard side of the outdrive but only kind of spraying/misting out of the port side.

OK so I figure it is something major like a cracked block down to something like manifold or riser gasket or head gasket?

Thoughts on a systematic approach to identifying the problem would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of water in the pan is usually the result of water from the cooling system getting into the oil via a hole or crack in the water jacket. NOT from an exhaust manifold/riser/riser gasket leak (unless you have a hole in a piston)

You just do not get a lot of water in the pan from the exhaust side of the engine.

You first order of business should be to pressure check the block.

If the block holds pressure, you can look elsewhere.

If not, then you're wasting your time looking at anything else.

Thanks guys. Ok to pressure check the block...as that article just said
"How can you check the block? well, the best way is to drain the water out of the block, block off all the hoses going to the exhaust manifold/s and anywhere else, and see if you can pressurize the block with air. It should hold 15 lbs. If it doesn?t and you can?t pump it up, then you have a problem"

I would like some more detail on blocking off all(which) hoses...how to block? Then how to pressurize....rig up a bicycle foot pump or something?

Ok not knowing yet how to pressure test the block, I pulled off the manifold riser and the valve lifter cover to have a peek. I don't see anything standing out....looked down into manifold and it looks sooty and rusty(lots of rusty flakes came out of the drain hole). Below are pictures of both and of the two big chunks of impellar fins I found ..the bigger one in the very end of the inlet hose where it connects to the t-stat? The smaller one down in the elbow it connects to. I wonder where the rest of the pieces ended up and I also wonder how the heck it was getting enough water thru it?

Anyways I am kinda stuck ... drained oil again and this is what it looks like:

Well that is a problem with failed impellers. pieces usually end up in the t-stat housing, head, block, where ever.....


It will be easier to see everything if you resize your pictures so we don't have to scroll to see and read the thread. (Photobucket does have an easy resize utility)

If you go up to the top of this forum, there's links to instructions on how to do most every maintenance procedure, service manuals, pressure checking etc.

Basically, You'll be plugging all the hoses (disconnect the manifold hoses) and using an air compressor or any kind of air pump to put about 15 psi on the block.

If it's leaking, you usually hear it right away.

The 140 Mercruiser is a 3.0L engine isn't it? You could pull the side cover and you might see a rusty crack. They sometimes crack in that area. ....... they also frequently crack up under the manifold up close to the head sealing area but that usually doesn't result in water in the oil...

Ok now I have another problem or two. After another oil change I was running it on the hose and I noticed some water leaking inside the transom below the plate that the outdrive is fastened onto..just below the bolt on the starboard side. This is probably not good and may explain if water got in sufficiently to flood the engine causing all that water in the oil pan?(before I the sucker came along and purchased it).

Also...my tilt/trim has stopped working.

ACTUALLY ...the water is not leaking in under the outdrive transom plate but rather in over it below the main drive shaft. ?

After two oil changes still pretty milky. If it doesn't get better after this one I am about to give up and part it out and try to recoup my money. Too bad it is a nice old boat.

I just got the exact same boat and engine. Engine fired up no problem after sitting. I drained the oil and found coffee as well. I put new oil in and realized I had a small hole in the bottom of the engine leaking my new oil out. That explains why I had water in the oil.

Since I don't want to invest much in this boat. Jb weld is the solution I'm going with on that one.

My other concern is that the Trm and tilt will not work. When I hit up or down on the tilt I hear a click like a solenoid going off but thats it. When i hit the trim i hear nothing.

Any input would be appreciated as this is my first boat and don't have much marine mechanic experience
