Mercruiser 140 vs. 135

Hey, could someone give me some of the differences between a 1985 Mercruiser 140 engine and a 1995 Mercruiser 135. I might buy a 1995 boat cheap that has a cracked block and put in the 140 block with the newer components. Will it bolt right up?!

Thanks,
Ryan

P.S. My left muffler bearing was installed and it's working great, but I should have replaced the right one at the same time, cause now it's going bad.

Re: Mercruiser 140 vs. 135

What is a 135? I have heard of the 140 - which is the 3.0 liter, and the 120, which is the 2.5 liter... but what is the 135?

EDIT: I see the 135 is also the 3 liter. I don't know what the difference is - maybe simply how they measure the HP? I would think the two would be interchangeable however.

Don't forget to check the blinker fluid while you are at it. ;)

i believe i read that the differance is in the head size. need to make sure motor mount lines up on transom plates also.

If all you're doing is replacing the short block it SHOULD be a direct bolt in. If you're doing the long block then you may have some issues with the head and manifold mating There are at least 3 different styles of head manifold combo's.

As long as the 3.0 short block is the same I should be alright.

Thanks,

Just be warned, some have dished pistons, and some had flat tops, depending on what head they felt like using at the time...

I don't know how close an 85 and 95 are, but there have been changes with the 140HP/3.0L engine over the years that could give you problems;

- manifold (port configuration, there are 4-5 different configurations for GM 4cyl marine engines)
- riser (straight back of turned 45*?)
- carb (Rochester or Mercarb?)
- linkages/shift cable locations (mounted on transom shield, valve cover, manifold?)
- rear engine mount spacing (they changed it to a wider mount in...?)
- coupler (bolted to crank or bolted to flywheel)
- flywheel (14" or 12+")
- starter (for 14 or 12" flywheel)
- ignition to shift interrupt switch wiring (depends on ignition system, one grounds, other gets 12V)
- wiring harness
- probably other stuff I don't remember right now...

Now that's what I'm talking about. I'm mostly concerned about the shortblock bolting on to the 95 intake, flywheel housing, and other 95 components. Thanks for the input. I may go for it and have it ready to flip next spring.
