My Merc 140 won't return to idle. It looks like the previous owner put a spring on to help pull the throttle all the way back but I don't think thats factory and would like to get it the way it's supposed to work. I'm assuming something is wrong with the linkage, but everything looks ok and tight, just a minimum of "slop". It will idle back correctly when I move it by hand on the carb, but using the throttle won't get it down to idle. Any thoughts?

Adjust the barrel at the carb .turn it toward the cable end a bit. gives more throw to close carb.

He is refering to the barrel on the shift cable. It should be adjusted to put a light preload on the linkage in the idle position. What year engine do you have, they aren't all exactly the same.

1984 with a Merccarb. I bought the manual, but I can't find anything on adjusting the linkage.

Great, look at page 2A-7. Pictures with circles and arrows and complete discription.<br />Assuming "The" manual you have is the OEM Mercruiser #3 manual.
