Re: mercruiser 140?

The 3.7Liter , aka 470 is a 165 to 195 HP engine depending on carburetion.
What's making you think it's 140hp?

The 140 in the other boat is a 3.0 Liter

Re: mercruiser 140?

There was a sticker with 140 on it or the outdrive. I cant remember because i only had the boat for about a hour before it locked up and Its been in the shop since then. They called and confirmed that it is the motor not the sterndrive that is locked up and suggested that the 470 wasnt worth rebuilding because of all the problems they have. I was wondering if I could just put a different kind of motor in and if It would match up to the sterncrive that I have or should I just sell it for parts and start over?

If the "470" is an inline 6 engine, it is well worth rebuilding (or at least getting a new marine long block)...

I did and I love it.

FWIW

its a 4cyl with some sort of inner cooler device. From what I can gather it was only made for a short time and is very problem prone.

470 is an aluminum Mercruiser block with a modified Ford Cast iron head....it is the worst i/o engine to have beyond it's 20th birthday even...
I agree a repower is needed. I would go to a 4.3 V6. You will need a donor boat with a rotten hull, and change everything over. Sell the "140" drive on eBay - it's the wrong drive regardless....
