mercruiser 1500 outboare serial number

hello

I bought a boat with the 1500 merc outboard motor the cover is black with blue stripes I need to determine the year so I can obtain a repair manual for it but the transom was replaced and the old one was was trashed by the previous owner. Is there any other way to determine what year the motor is? I searched the block and did not see any serial number there.

Big, That motor was discontinued after '78. It was a distributor model in '77 and prior. The block will have a part number on it, transfer cover side, where the crancakse cover joins the block.

By the sound of it you're looking at buying an after-market manual (needing the year rather than the serial number)... DON'T DO IT!!!, get the OEM manual... You'll thank me in the future.

The serial number is stamped in the top of the block. You'll have to remove the top cover to see it. You're looking for a 7 digit number, probably starting with 3 or 4, if it's a US built engine, 7 if it's Canadian and 8 for an Australian.

does 3426129 make sense as a serial number. I guess the previous owner still had the old transom in his yard after all. Does anyone know where I can get a service repair manual for this motor

That's a valid serial number and that makes it 'Made in U.S.A.' However, it doesn't appear to be a 1500. Their serial numbers don't start until 3502806. It looks more like a 1400. I'll know more in a week when I'm home (currently a bit far away).

Any merc dealer can get you a manual. Alternatively you can go to the merc website and order it directly..... You'll need to put a 0 (zero) in front of that serial number when the site asks for serial number. It gets cranky with only 7 digits....

I was wondering the same thing about the serial number but on the cowling it says 1500 thunderbolt.
