i bought a mercruiser 160 engine that has not run for 3 or so years ,it turns over but have low psi in back cyl. 50 psi other 5 has 100 psi
do you think its rings or values
should i tear it down and have it rebuild
we have been soaking cyl. with bake fuild and deisel fuel to free things up
once its ok its going into a reinell 22 foot hard top

100 psi is very well used. won't give much performance with that. 50 psi says there is a serious issue. If it were mine, I'd be looking to rebuild or get a long block. A leakdown will give you a better idea, but you'll be tearing it down anyway with the 100psi compression numbers.

I would get it started and check it again after about 30 minutes of running. Then you will know what you have. You can also do a wet test and get the answers to most of your questions.

i am going to have to see if it has spark , then clean carb and see if it will run.

ok, as i said back cyl had 50 psi and rest had 100 psi , i placed some oil in back cyl. and it came up to 100 psi .
does it mean i am leaking psi from rings
or is it in valves.
its torn down right now
in bad cyl . looks like some light rust
i shined up cyl. wall but have not tested it.
also going to take valves out and reseat them.

yes the oil helps the rings much more. I would have run it first but now I would look up the spects on it and have a mechanic mic it. may be able to hone it and install new rings. have him check the bottom end and the cam

the motor is out of they boat sitting on a deck,i was going to run it but carb need cleaned or rebuilt, coil seams bad as well as plug wires .
may have more problems to start.
have found some light rust in back cyl. that may have kept rings from making contact with cyl. walls.
going to clean head and check again

I assume this is an inline 6.

Check the head to ensure it is flat since you have it off. I am told that it is common to warp the head on these engines if you overheat them.
