Hi I have a mercruiser 165, which I suspect that the intake manifold is leaking water into the engine. It has a closed loop cooling system as well as the saltwater cooling. Well I am trying to diagnose the problem. I am sure I will have so many questions as I go along with it.

Well I was trying to take the riser off the exhaust (intake ) manifold. Loosened all the nuts. The riser will not loosen up at all. Hammered the riser using a wooden block and a hammer from all sides nothing....as if its one peace with the manifold. I can see a gasket that is about an 1/16 - 1/8 in between. I just can't loosen it up at all so I can lift it from the manifold. I will appreciate the help, before I start going crazy with my sledge!!!:D

How much over full is it?
Milky oil is probably not from a leaky exhaust riser. That would put water on the piston and hydrolock the engine engine, but shouldn't leak past the rings.
Having a closed cooling system doesn't help it freezing if the antifreeze is only good for 20? above freezing and the temp gets to 0 or below.
As far as the stuck riser, did you get all 4 bolts out?

Don
I took all of the four bolts out....I thought it could be the block for the milky oil, but the antifreeze is filled and is not decreasing at all....also the water droplets on the spark plug...is clean pure water, not green....It is taking fresh water... It is an old engine, I noticed that the gaskets between the manifold and the engine are old, as well as the riser.... The one between the engine and the manifold is orange, but they look if they are melted (round edges look like melted plastic).
I am taking the riser out for inspection, then I will take the manifold out of the engine before I start looking into the engine head....
Thanks

OK I managed to get the riser out ... the water passage was all rusted ( I beleive the three holes on the sides) and blocked... I saw water at the bottom of the intake....Would the problem be just in the riser or the intake also. I did manage to clean the intake holes from all the rusty flakes... need advise see photos ...budget is a concern... If I will only need the riser it will be much better than riser and manifold.

Also can I test the manifold now without taking it off the engine? Looks heavy ... no helpers around!

your expeience is appreciated...Thanks.

Managed to do it ... It took alot of heavy hitting until it got released....and even then ... it will not lift up easily

I would check the headgasket first. Look at the link in my signature I have been through this with an open cooled 165/ 250CI straight 6.

When testing the engine first time, So much water and oil came out from the breather...now I beleive water couldn't find away out of the manifold as the water passage was blocked....

Also I am not sure about this.. during the first time running the engine, I had the throtle open wide. I was just frustated that the engine would not start ... the oil looked good....so when it started and I heard the engine on high rev, I reduced the throtle immediatly and switch off the engine, as I also saw the creamy oil coming out of the breather....

Could the head gasket been damaged by this event, or not.... What steps should I take to analyze my problem..
I have been reading a lot of posts about this, but as I am not a mechanic and this is my first engine to fix, I appreciate all comments.

1. I am thinking that I should pressure the sea water intake, but I have the riser off, so how could I do it....

2. Then I would like to pressure test the engine for leaks, (if water got into the engine, although that I changed the oil twice and still not looking milky) should I still change the oil again before doing the pressure test... I beleive that the manifold was still leaking water into the engine as the sparks had water drops after I change oil and did a compression test. Water is not green it is clean white water.

3. Compression test . I did one but I beleive I did it wrong, I am getting 30 and 40 in all compressions, is this due to the water in oil? I have removed all the spark plugs, and had the throatle wide open during the test. also disconnected the coil. Crancked the engine 4 - 5 times for each compression. Was that the right procedure?

Manifolds are so expensive , but you guys are experts and you can tell, from the above pictures if you think it can be saved, and at least have this season without major repairs. Thanks.

4. I was also looking for the flappers are they in the risers or where can I find them... I though you would have them so no back was water get into the engine...

Not a chance in the world. Time to get a new one. If money is that tight, you can search around for a used one... but that is a gamble at best.

That manifold is past the junk stage of it's life.

Have few questions?

1. water shutter ... How many of you do really change it or check it..... Is it safe to run the engine without one? ( I haven't checked yet..if it is missing or not)

2. When testing the water on the trailler using muffs, should I open the water fully , 1/2 , or 1/4 the way (water hose).

3. Is there a way of testing the water pump? I assume that the pressure from the hose, will push the water through the engine.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Hi
I'm wondering how to test a manifold on a 165 mercruiser. I have just put a new one on and I still am getting water into the exhaust chamber of the manifold and consiquently into the engine oil
Thanks for any suggestions

Welcome to iboats 28.
You really need to start a new thread with your question. Few will see it as reply #14 of someone elses old thread.
