Re: Mercruiser 165-Transom Plate/Bell Housing

I did this a while back on my 140.

You will need to drop the trim line/hose manifold from the bottom of the gimble housing and remove the 2 hydraulic lines that go into the boat. You will also need to disassemble the lower shift cable as it will not fit through the transom plate, best thing is to just cut and replace it since this should be replaced while you are in there. Nothing else I can remember...

Depending on how old/bad the transom assembly is, the lower nuts/bolts might be corroded and frozen. I snapped 1 of them while removing it (came out in 2 pieces) and the other one was corroded 1/2 way through. Had to buy a set of bolts/nuts and anodes to replace the bad hardware. I also had 1 bolt that broke off in the gimble housing. Tried soaking in PB blaster for weeks, heat, welding a nut on top of the existing portion and working it out with an impact, etc, etc. Finally had to drill it out, lots of fun...

Fisherdan, thanks for the help. Still a little confused. The bell housing needs to come off first, right? Or are you saying the whole outer transom plate will come off with the bell housing if I remove the lower shift cable and hydraulic attachment? Sorry, the manual kind of overwhelming me right now.

Re: Mercruiser 165-Transom Plate/Bell Housing

Thinking about it, you don't have to disassemble the lower shift cable to pull it through the transom plate, it will slip right through, bad call on my part. (The lower shift cable does need to be disassembled or cut to get it out of the gimble housing,,, but that's not a concern for just removing the transom assembly like you are asking about) The bell housing can be left attached to the gimble ring/gimble housing, you can pull it as a complete assembly.

But, it might be easier to remove the bell housing while it's one the boat, more leverage to pull it off and you won't be wrestling the whole transom assembly on the work bench. I assume you are going to replace the bellows and lower shift cable while everything is apart, right? Also, if you are going to replace the gimble bearing I'd pull it out while the transom assembly is still on the boat. I pulled the gimble bearing while the transom assembly was sitting on the work bench and it was MUCH easier when I did it on the boat.

I guess it all depends on how long the transom assembly is going to be off the boat. If it's just a few weeks I'd pull everything apart while on the boat. But if it's going to be off for a few months I'd pull it as a complete assembly and then tackle the it (bellows, gimble bearing, lower shift cable, etc) when you are going to put it back on. Things have a way of getting lost,,, got kids  (I do :D)

Or should I say...

Re: Mercruiser 165-Transom Plate/Bell Housing

great info mark. thanks so much. I'll get after tonight. My concern right now is to get it off the boat so I can do my stringer transom work. I suppose to change the maintenance stuff I could build a frame or mount it on the old transom when I get to that point. Thank you again for clearing this up for me. Going to be a huge time saver. I guess I need to detach the steering linkage too huh?

Re: Mercruiser 165-Transom Plate/Bell Housing

ok, couple last things before I pull them apart.

1) Is it correct that the lower shift cable will come out with the barrell on it? (removing bell housing, outer transom plate together)

2) When I drop the hydraulic manifold at the bottom of the bell housing and disconnect the two lines going to the boat, what do I cap them with? Is this going to make a huge mess? Is it better to disconnect the two lines inside the boat?

Thanks in advance

Ayuh,...

1,... Yes, There's Plentyof space/ room...

2,... I'd disconnect at the trim Pump...
There's going to be some oil loss, but that's what Rags are for...
Fyi,... Automotive Brake lines use the same sizes of fittings... You might stumble onto some Caps somewhere,..?..

Ok, everything came apart fine. Thanks for all the help here. One last question:

How do I get the steering cable off. I thought spinning that front mounting nut forward and sliding the assembly out would work but the nut doesn't go past the threaded portion, i found. so, what now?

I have to do the same thing as you.i understand that I have to pull the outdrive to remove the motor but do you have to remove the bell housing and transom plate or are you doing it for another reason????
