I have a 1979 mercruiser 165 and the trim is going out I beleive. The trim will not work at all most of the time but I can here the selenoid clicking over. Once in a while for a very short period It will work fine in both directions up and down but most of the time it wont work in either direction. I tested the selenoid and it seems to be working as far as I can tell.
Is the trim pump assembly shot? and if so I would like to replace it myself if possible.
I beilieve the part number for it is SAE J1171 ?
Any advice will help to find the problem
Thanks

Re: Mercruiser 165 Trim

Do you have 2 solenoids or 1? Checking all connections for corrosion and tightness is the first thing to check.

The SAE J1171 is not a part number, it's a spec. that says the motor is ignition protected and can be used in the engine compartment of a boat.

Working...even intermittently...seems to me to be a bad/loose/corroded connection somewhere.

PRIOR to getting too excited about replacing things...CLEAN ALL of your connections. Wirebrush/clean/re-grease/tighten ALL contact points not only at the stern...but the helm also.

Troubleshooting without the knowledge of clean contacts is useless...
