The balancer is 2 pieces of metal with rubber between them and 32 years old, I'm not heating it. Bridge across the front and a jack screw should sufice or maybe a wood block and a little tappy tap tap.

I wanted to see what you would say about heating it. Damn right don't heat it.

Option 1:
Put it on end with the back on a cement floor and a piece of wood between the floor and the crank and a piece of wood between the hammer and the balancer and tap it on maybe a little bit of grease on the shaft to let it slide on easy.

Option 2:
Drilling a hole is kewl if you have access to the right equipment, do you have that access? That hole has to be absolutely perfectly drilled.

Option one is what we did 35 years ago and will still work today.

I guess I would be willing to drill and tap the crank snout, would 3/8-16 be enough ? Or should I go to 1/2-13.
Hoping to drill about 1" deep, bottom tap that and thread some threaded rod into it and use a nut and heavy washer to pull it on, would that work ?

should work just fine I would go 7/16 NF, use a stack of greased washers or a thrust bearing of some sort. a tool rental place should have a propper ballancer installing tool

Turn it on end so the back is on the cement floor and a piece of wood and tap it on, don't beat it like a cheating wife or your gonna mess up the bearings.

Did you learn this in the Air Force?
We used engine stands in the Army.
When the crank and the mating surface of the balancer are clean, the balancer will slide on.

No at the feet of a master machine shop owner. Remsen ave in Brooklyn NY.

My friends dad. He rebuilt every sort of motor. Diesels for garbage trucks, had the contract for the gas company, phone company and Con Edison. He also had the contact for tow trucks for the gas company, phone company Con ED.. Snow plowing also.

Also rebuilt motors for taxi fleets. But mostly a taxi came in we already had a motor to drop in, if the car sat for a day was a day lost in income.

He also owned trotters, and was friends with my uncle who owned ACE glass in Brooklyn.

Some people who read this will know.

Air Force was different what we didn't have we could order and have within 2 days, there wasn't a lot of what we didn't have.

A couple of guys every day would take inventory, and we never ran out of bolts or anything else.

We called it a crate, back then stands.

And i still do and people say to me what?
