and it seems the alenator is cactus.
Made a bearing destroying sound plus no more charging of the batteries.
They, the Mercury dealer here wants Aus $398 for a new Mando5? altenator
This is just supply and it seems that some different wiring has to be performed by myself to make it operate!
Not just a plug in but a root around:mad: with chances of it turning pearshape.
Is there an other simple plug in alternative.

GM 3 wire or 1 wire will fit.

Hi Guys:

You have one of the best engines ever marinized for pleasure boat use. If you can make it work then you would be ahead of the game to keep it. In order to swap it out for a more recent version you'd have to get a new upper drive unit with the matching gear ratio for the new engine. You now have a 1.65:1 ratio. I'm pretty sure that in Oz you have many matching engines as I think they used them long after North America finished so you should be able to find some parts for it. Good luck.

I rebuilt a similar engine, custom modded it and installed FWC. It's a great engine as has been mentioned. For the alternator take it to a local 'alternator repair shop'. It's the same components as a GM alternator so the rebuild should be simple. I had my alternator rebuilt and had him put in a low-RPM diode so the alternator would kick in at 450RPM vs. 1000RPM. That way it would charge the battery at idle. You should expect an alternator rebuild to be less than $100AU. Shop around and you should be able to find a good repair shop. The shop I used saved me hundreds over 4 rebuilds.

Perth, WA.
Engine and leg are in fine fettle.
The ride of this boat is just awsome, the deep Vee hull cuts through the chop/waves like a sharp knife!

Looks like the altenator can be rebuild (propper marinised oe) after speaking to the actual owner.
Have replaced the old foam inside the engine cover with good fire retardent aluminium backed insulation.
Slowly getting it ship shape.
