Mercruiser 170 - issues!!!

I just bought a boat with an inboard mercruiser 170 hp. The previous owner had the boat sitting and only started out of water at an idol every now and then. The boat will do fine up to approx 3,000 RPM's and then completely dies. It will restart after sitting for a few minutes. I first thought it had bad gas from sitting for a couple years so I siphened out and refilled. I also cleaned out the carb and replaced the coil thinking it might have something to do with the spark, but it is still doing the same thing.

Any ideas??

Re: Mercruiser 170 - issues!!!

This is from a 1986 Cobia Sportster with a mercruiser 170 hp

Motor is super clean and seems to be in good condition, but I just can't get to the bottom of the problem here. It goes great at an idol, but after reaching about 3,000 RPM's, it completely dies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Ditto...

if that does not work, keep looking at your fuel delivery... pump, carb, even cracked fuel lines sucking in air
