hey guys, i recently finished up a whole new tuneup on my 86' 170 merc. things changed were, 1)plugs, 2)wires, 3)distributor cap, 4)coil, and 5)converted to electronic conversion so no more points or condenser. here's the thing, it cranks beautifully and i was really confused why it wouldn't start. so i took the line off that goes from the fuel pump to the carb and cranked it again and literally not a drop of fuel came out, everything was bone dry...i'm thinking the fuel pump is clogged or shot? PLEASE HELP!!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Inspect, 'n change the fuel filter to see if there's Crud in the system,...

Hook up a remote tank to the fuel pump, 'n Try it,....

Is there gas in the tank,..??
Is it Good gas, or Rotten,..?? Smell test it,...

I checked the filter and it's perfectly fine that's why I went straight to the fuel pump itself being the issue...and the gas is from September but I always start it in the spring with gas from the past summer and there's never a problem.

If the fuel pump was clogged wouldn't there be a little gas shown? I feel like since it's all bone dry that the whole fuel pump is just broken

The diaphragm in the mechanical pump is probably torn. Cheap and easy fix to replace it.

Where can I find one of these? Should I inspect it first before buying one?
