Re: Mercruiser 170 with Alpha one outdrive

Ok. I've replaced the majority of the seals in the lower unit and I've had the bearing varied out and it all looks good in there. At the top of the lower unit there is an oil hole that goes from driveshaft bearing to hole in top of lower unit. This was blocked.
All connected back up and oil now staying in the unit with no leakage.
I now have a new problem. Have adjusted cables on side of engine but if forward engages correctly reverse won't or vice versa
Please don't tell me I have to drop lower unit again. When I put lower unit it on I put it in to drive and turned the prop ccw till stopped and set remote to forward. Any ideas please?

I started a new thread for my gear shifting problem. Just to bring this thread to a close, Everything is back together and hopefully will have boat on the water in the next week or 2.
Reason for gear shift problem was aft shift cable binding. Pulled the inner out and forced loads of lube down the centre of the outer. Saved another ?60.

That is not a long term repair... Less than 6 months and it will be binding up again....

Unfortunately, that's not going to work. When the shift cable is worn the only fix is replacement. The tension thru the cable needs to be just right or the shift interruptor will be stalling out your engine when you try and shift it.
