I have a question about the leaking cam. How many times can you perform the seal repair, before you have to replace the cam?

It is totally a matter of valve train wear which determines replacement time for cam shaft. By the time you need to replace the cam, you'll basically need an entire rebuild because you'd need to replace bearings, lifters, etc. In order to do the bearings, its virtually a complete tear down.

If grooves are worn on the cam from the seals on the pump then the repair I have seen folks talk about most is the use of speedi-sleeves. What I am wondering is, how many times can a cam be re-sleeved? I have read that I can do it, just wondered how many times before a tear down?

That is a common problem on this engine. The engine is a 224 ci engine made by mercruiser. There are two seals that leak. The speedy seal can be cut off and you can install a new one as long as you have money. You can pull the front cover on this engine without pulling the engine down.Make sure you grease in between the seals. One seal is for oil amd the other is for coolant. since this engine is fresh water cooled. Its an easy fix good luck

This engine has no cam bearings. so keep up with oil changes.

I am replacing those two seals right now on the timing chain cover plate. There are grooves worn in the cam. The reason for the job is that I had coolant leaking from the weaping hole. Suggesting that coolant had compromised the first seal on the impeller side. I have the new seals, but I am afraid the problem is the small grooves in the cam. I want to go the speedy sleeve route. I measured it and it looks to be about 2.5 cm in diameter. I was trying to get a precise spec from the book but I haven't found it anywhere in the manual. Does anyone know the diameter of the cam shaft on a 1986 Merc 140 4 cylander? From what I know about speedy sleeves it seems that you need to get a precise fit. Thanks
