mercruiser 228/chevy 305 carb

Just got a 1979 ebko with a mercruiser 228/ chevy 305. It has been sitting for a long time and needs a new carb. List for the mercruiser part is over $700. I was wondering if there is a cheaper option such as using an automotive carb. What are my options?<br />Thanks

Don't use an automotive carb. Since the manifold is spreadbore q-jet style, I used a spreadbore to squarebore adapter like this one <br /><br /> http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=5753&prmenbr=361 <br /><br />If your carb now is 2-barrel you will need to track down an iron small block 4-barrel manifold, should be pretty cheap though, and should bolt right on to your 305. I have a few laying around here, but shipping would be crazy. <br /><br />I haven't ever done much with a 305, so I don't know if there would be any adverse effects from over-carbing, but it's great on the 350. You will want to wait for someone with more experience to offer suggestions. This sure beats $700 though. Can you have your carb rebuilt?

Are there any reputable carb rebuilders in the area? I would just check on having have the old one rebuilt first.

The 600cfm would be great for a 220hp application. I believe coast guard requires a spillover tube of sorts if the carb floods (float stuck) so you don't start a fire. Otherwise their shouldn't be any differences. <br /><br />The carb you have should be a rochester quadrajet. Its the most common GM carb. can be had off an 80-83 camaro/firebird/other rear wheel drive v8 car. You could then add the marine component to it. Don't pay more than 50.00 for one of these used.<br /><br />Whatever you do tho, please don't use a holley in a boat. With the reputation for fuel spraying, flooding, even with marine provisions it may be unsafe.<br /><br />-- Joe

Be sure you have good gas, if your working from a dirty tank it will drive you nuts.Buy a carb kit for 20 bucks and give it a try. http://www.amarket.com/

Check Jegs. For about $500 you can go with an Edelbrock Performer intake and Edelbrock Performer 600 or 650 marine carb. I did on a '90 Celebrity 20' cuddy and it made a world of diff. John

ditto on the edelbrock intake and carb! Huge difference... But i was comming from a 2 brl and i think the 228 is a 4 brl already?...

edelbrack makes excellent carbs for 8 cylinder engines. I put one on a '74 Ford F-350 with a 460 V-8 and it was like a new motor. I would definately recommend.
