Ok So I am buying a complete Mercruiser 228 setup prop to coupler and flywheel cover. Is there going to be any issues if I mate this with a chevy 350? I got the entire package for $400. Any opinions welcome.

Re: Mercruiser 228 questions

Ok so where can I get a parts break down for Mercruiser engines and drives and all the transom parts? Looking at what I got I do not think the Fly wheel cover will mate with the 93 chevy block. So I need to be able to look at part numbers from the different years. I paid $400 for this complete setup am want to make it work.Every thing is in great shape. So where do I find a parts break down with Mercruiser numbers? If I have to replace the flywheel cover, where would I buy one and what is the proper name for that piece?

Ayuh,... It Will... Chevy's are All the Same,... It's called a Flywheel Cover...

Here's a Parts Lookup...

The Issue is going to be the Coupler,...

Sierra sells a retrofit coupler to use a Later motor, with the Earlier drives...

So would it be easier(and cheaper ) to change out my crank shaft and flywheel? I am havine a hard time figuring out what is needed. According to the serial number of the out drive it is a 78- 83. The engine block is a 92 4 bolt main 2 piece rear seal.

No,... Swapping the Crankshaft,+ Flywheel Can't be done in that block...

That motor will hook-up to that drive,...

That is the problem I can not figure out which coupler I need . Triangular or the one the bolts on to the center. The problem is that the engine block does not match th ecrankshaft. The interals are from whatever engine previously cracked and a newrer block was machined to fit the pistons.. OI! What headache.

Re: Mercruiser 228 questions

What is interesting is that the crank shaft casting number(3932442) indicates that it is a 69-85 model. So shouldn't it bolt right up to the 77-82 228? This engine was originally mated to a volvo 280 and it hhas a triangular coupler that mounted on the fly wheel. The coupler that came with the 228 has a smaller hole pattern than the crankshaft and fly wheel.

Thanks Bond-O appreciate the leg work. I had narrowed it down to that number and one other. But I am thinking that the coupler I have is the retro one as the guy I got the outdrive from said it had a 3 year old crate motor mated to it. The one off of my 165 inline 6 maybe the correct one, if I am reading pns correctly:D
