Mercruiser 230 Alpha 1 - Water coming through transom

Hey all,

I have an 89 Mercruiser 230 Alpha 1 and I'm getting a continuous stream of water coming through the transom plate. See the pic. The arrow is pointing at the water running through right below the hydraulic hoses. The bellows appear to be in really good condition with no obvious cracks or tears. What else could cause this much water to be running in like this?

I suspect your transom is rotten

pull the drive, pull the motor and make a test drill or two.

however your 35 year old boat is about 15-20 years past its design life.

I hear you about the age.....I'm about 15-20 years past MY design life!

If the tansom is rotted, where would the water be coming through though? Around the seal of the transom plate on the outside of the transom? Everything seems real solid back there and the boat doesn't sit in the water, I pull it in and out every time.

depends on how bad the transom is rotted.

Ayuh,.... There's no easy answer, 'n a rotten transom is the most likely suspect,....

When the transom rots, the outer, 'n inner transom plates can't compress against the wood, that ain't there,....
So it leaks,....

I bet if you were to hammer the throttle in reverse,..... It'll leak Alot Worse,...
