Check for a collapsing fuel line or a plugged vent to the tank. Possibly a faulty check valve... Easy thing is to just run from a small outboard type tank.

Brand new fuel hose, and I checked the pickup tube when I replaced it. As I mentioned earlier, I've also installed a brand new carb and filter, the water separator is new, and the glass bowl is empty. And if you're referring to the vent on the outside of the hull, it spits good when I fill the tank. But where is this check valve at?

Should be in or just after the pickup, some have a small filter there as well. Temporarily remove & blow out filter with compressed air.

Did you do any maintenance to the engine while you replaced the drive, That's when it started running poorly right. Maybe you could recap exactly what was done prior to it running poorly. Did you maybe adjust the valves?

Oh, the ball check in the 90 deg. fitting at the top. Yeah, that's good, I checked it when I pulled the pickup. Fuel delivery isn't a problem, I disconnected the fuel line and pointed it into a bucket while I bumped the engine. Good strong blast of fuel from just a bump of the key.

No, didn't adjust anything, just replaced the cap, rotor, wires and plugs, at first. After I realized it wasn't running right, I installed a new coil. Then the ECM (the e-spark from Mallory). Then a carb. While I was replacing all of this, I was checking the compression, timing, fuel delivery, all of that. In fact, the only thing related to fuel and firing that hasn't been replaced is the distributor body itself.

If i am not mistaken but I/O's are not allowed to have glass bowls or plastic on fuel lines.

Mercruisers have a glass bowl attached to the fuel pump with a little plastic sign in it that says "Replace fuel pump if gas appears in this bowl". It's a catch for a blown fuel pump diaphragm. And the fuel hose from the tank to the pump is a cloth inserted rubber USCG type 1. It's a rubber hose so that the engine torque doesn't damage it and cause a fuel leak in the bilge.

They don't have glass bowls anymore. Not even sure you can even buy those fuel pumps anymore. Now there is a clear hose that routs the fuel that gets past the ruptured diaphragm to the carb. If you see fuel in the hose or your engine starts running real rough becuase of all the extra fuel getting dumped in it, you know its ruptured.
